Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital is passionate about providing the best medical and emotional care for our residents and patients. Quality of life for the people who stay at and work at Levindale is the top priority.
Levindale was founded in 1890 as the Hebrew Friendly Inn. Later, it was renamed Levindale for Louis H. Levin. He was a former executive director of the Associated Jewish Charities. Levindale is an agency of THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.
In July 1996, Levindale joined with Sinai Hospital to form the Sinai Health System. Then in 1998, Sinai Health merged with Northwest Hospital to become part of LifeBridge Health. This distinctive system brings a full continuum of health care services to the community.
The Specialty Hospital at Levindale is a 120-bed facility,
which consists of 60 gero-psychiatric beds, 60 complex medical beds—some
with ventilator capacity—and 20 acute rehabilitation beds. In addition,
Levindale operates a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and two
adult day care centers. Levindale and Courtland Gardens merged in 1999.
Today, Levindale is a 292-licensed-bed center. Levindale's geriatric center includes 172 comprehensive care (long-term care) beds, 20 sub-acute beds and 60 dementia care beds.
Community/Outreach Services
Levindale has employee physicians, PAs and NPs on staff. In addition, there are over 100 attending and consulting physicians credentialed at Levindale covering 24/7 in-house medical provider coverage.The medical team also includes 600 nurses and nursing assistants. Our support team has professionals who are second to none when it comes to ensuring continuous care for our residents and patients.

Levindale provides full-time chaplaincy of all religions. However, Levindale is a Jewish center and Jewish laws are followed. These include strictly kosher meals, as well as the celebrations and observances of Jewish holidays and customs.
Eden Alternative and Neighborhood Model
Levindale was the first long-term care center in Maryland to become a registered Eden Alternative facility in 2000. The Eden Alternative philosophy continuously focuses on the joys of life for the elders who live here and the employees who work here. The goals are to eliminate loneliness, helplessness and boredom. The staff does this with plants, pets and frequent contact with children, as well as listening to the individual wishes of residents and patients.
In 2007, Levindale continued our path of culture change by adopting the Neighborhood Model. Units have become "neighborhoods" to target resident-directed care. The goal is to train all Levindale employees in Person First techniques, which emphasize the individual needs of residents and patients.
Pain and Palliative Program
Easing the physical and emotional pain of residents and patients is extremely important at Levindale. A program was especially designed to fulfill the wishes of people who are in pain, who are chronically ill or at the end of their lives.
